Report CYCLONE HITS BANGLADESH Appeals : please click here for details (Nov., 2007) A Private and Public Struggle Recognized HCI’s supported a fundraising dinner organized by the Canadian Muslim Network in conjunction with MPs crossing political party lines to pay tribute to Mr. Maher Arar and Dr. Monia Mazigh. In honour of their courage, tenacity and grace, a Maher Arar and Monia Mazigh Scholarship was created for a student working in the area of civil liberties and human rights at the Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa. These two remarkable individuals have taken a nation to task to clear their names, taught us great lessons and return Canada to its root of justice and liberty. Our fundamental human rights were affirmed. HCI contributed $3,000.00 to this important and prestigious scholarship. In the past, HCI has supported several other scholarship programs, events and projects. For example, the Bill McWhinney Scholarship Fund was established at the Carleton University, supporting students in bot
h the School of Journalism and Communications and the Norman Patterson School of International Affairs. All donations from organizations and individuals for the Arar/Mazigh Scholarship were publicly acknowledged and in turn, promote the strength of our community. The fundraiser’s distinguished speakers included Hon. Jack Layton, Hon. M. Gilles Duceppe, and Hon. Stephane Dion. Other recipients of special acknowledgement included Alex Neve (Amnesty International), Alexa McDonough (NDP), Hon. Marcel Prud’homme (Senator), Mr. Arar’s dedicated lawyers and several journalists who kept the story alive with their focus on the essence of this case: justice. A Rare Opportunity to Share and Learn HCI was honoured to assist a delegation of 15 members from Mindanao, Philippine.
The “Study Mission” focused on five key areas: local government, leadership and management, service delivery, resource generations and management, participatory governance and peace building. In Ottawa, HCI facilitated one on one meeting with several accomplished Muslims for the delegation followed by a welcoming dinner which highlighted guest speaker Mr. Azhar Ali Khan who had lived in Philippine. The same arrangements were made for other members of the delegation in Toronto where the guest speaker was Mr. Ayub Hamid, a well known local author.
