A devastating storm and vicious tornado have left a trail of destruction through the Canadian cities of Ottawa, Ontario and Gatineau, Quebec. At least 20 people are injured and thousands have been left homeless. The tornado caused major damage to the region’s power grid, leaving hundreds of thousands in the dark. Ottawa mayor Jim Watson has called it one of the most traumatic disasters to hit Canada’s capital in decades.
In the Ottawa neighbourhood of Dunrobin, 53 families had their homes annihilated by this disaster. More than 1,500 people are displaced in the single Gatineau neighbourhood of Mont-Bleu due to damage to their homes.
HCI is currently coordinating a relief effort to provide crucial help to thousands of families reeling from this disaster just kilometers from HCI’s headquarters.
